According to news reports, Apple could soon begin iPhone production in India.

A report in the Economic Times indicates Foxconn is negotiating a deal with the Maharashtra government to acquire a 1,200-acre plot of land to set up a US $10 billion plant to manufacture Apple’s hardware. It goes on to state that operations will begin by the end of 2017, and that state Industry Minister Subhash Desai revealed plans for Foxconn’s manufacturing plant.

Foxconn is already manufacturing hardware for brands like Xiaomi and OnePlus in India, and had announced six months ago that it was planning to expand operations to Maharashtra, among other states.

The news comes hot on the heels of the Indian government’s decision to reject Apple’s plans to resell refurbished iPhones in the country. When the proposal was turned down, citing e-waste concerns among other things, that cut off Apple’s only other option to boost its sales numbers in India, a market it has yet to gain a strong foothold in, compared to Western markets. Manufacturing in India would mean Apple could avoid high import duties, thereby allowing it to price its devices more competitively in the price-conscious, Android-strong market.
