Apple Mac users have a new reason to cheer as the tech giant has reportedly announced its latest version of OS X 10.9 Mavericks computer operating system which is available for a free download.

The software will be available through Apple’s Mac App Store and will be free for those currently using Mountain Lion, Lion or Snow Leopard OS.

According to ABC News, the software has been named after the surfing location in northern California and includes a lot of new features and apps which are already part of Apple’s iOS7, currently used for iPads and iPhones.

Mavericks includes iBooks, a feature that allows users to sync their e-books from their iPhone and iPad with their Macs, while the Maps app feature allows them to sync their iOS devices to transfer addresses from laptop to their phones.

The tech giant has also refreshed its Safari Web browser with some new features, including a shared links sidebar that surfaces the links your friends have shared on Twitter or LinkedIn.

Apple’s senior Vice President of software engineering, Craig Federighi revealed that Mavericks will also improve battery life, even on current Macs, allowing up to an hour’s worth of extra Web browsing time.

The report said that other changes include a refreshed Finder window, which now has a tabbed view to minimize windows, while Tags feature allows users to tag photos and files for easy organization, apart from an improved Notifications feature which provides a summary of missed events when the user was away from the computer.
