App Review: It's time to hydrate yourself

Water Your Body is an interesting application that tells you how much water your body needs, and constantly sends you a reminder to drink.

A number of us forget to drink water regularly. This can be harmful in the long run, as drinking the right amount helps our body function in a better way. After all, 60 per cent of our body is made up of water. When winter arrives – and there is no Game of Thrones reference here – we tend to consume much less water, given that we don't feel as thirsty as we feel in summer. So, the two litres we consume during summer, comes down to half a litre or even less during winter.

This is where Water Your Body comes to play. A useful application available on both iTunes and Google Play Store, it tells an individual how much water s/he requires per day, based on body weight, the weather outside and whether the individual is exercising.

I weigh 88 kgs, am 183 cm tall and on an average winter's day (if you want to call the temperature in Mumbai cold) require 2.94 litres per day, according to the application. The application notifies me every hour with an annoying message, which sounds like someone is pouring water into a glass, telling me that I have to drink water. I then go to the menu, where I have a number of options to choose from regarding the amount of water consumed. One can also enter sports drinks and green tea as an option, which gives the user more flexibility.

The other interesting factor is that the application also asks you at what time you’re usually asleep, so that the notifications only come up when you’re awake. There is a snooze option in case you’re in a meeting or do not have any access to water for a couple of hours.

How does the app rate? In the two days of using it, while the notifications have met with a number of frowns from friends, I have definitely increased my water consumption. On the days I work out, my water consumption automatically increases by another 15 percent, which means I need a little over 3.2 litres to meet my daily goal. It may result in my visiting the bathroom throughout the day, but it's always a good detox, isn't it? I feel light and I recommend everyone try the application out.
