Acer's Swift 7 is the world's thinnest laptop, less than a centimetre thick

The company launched a new Chromebook and a range of notebook PCs at the IFA event in Germany.

The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) just kicked off in Germany, with Acer releasing a slew of products in the computing field. Among the goodies the company had to offer were a new Chromebook, an ultra-portable laptop line, a mini PC, and a new virtual reality headset

Chromebook R 13

First up is the new Acer Chromebook R 13, the industry’s first convertible Chromebook. The R 13 features a flexible design with a large 13.3-inch full HD (1920x1080) display that can be used in a number of different modes, including as a tablet thanks to its 360-degree hinges. It provides up to 12 hours of battery life and has an HD webcam (1280x720) and an integrated microphone.

The Acer Chromebook R 13 weighs only 1.49kg and measure in at 12.83mm (width) x 8.98mm (depth) x 0.61mm (height), making it reasonably portable, especially for the school students it was designed for. The device is powered by a MediaTek M8173C CorePilot quad-core processor and is available 4GB DDR4 RAM and 16GB/32GB/64GB storage variants. The R 13 also feature USB Type-C and Bluetooth 4.0.The Acer Chromebook R 13 will be available in North America in October with prices starting at US $399, but exact specifications, prices, and availability will vary for other regions.


Swift notebook series

Next is the new premiere Swift lineup of ultra-thin and lightweight notebook PCs, comprised of the Swift 7, Swift 5, Swift 3 and Swift 1.

The Swift 7 weighs in at just 1.1 kg and measures a mere 0.39 inches thin, making it the world’s first laptop less than 1cm thin. It features a black-and-gold dual tone design with Corning Gorilla Glass on a 13.3-inch full HD (1920x1080) It packs a 7th Generation Intel Core i5 processor, 256GB SSD and up to 8GB of RAM, as well as dual USB Type-C and 9 hours of battery.

The Swift 5 meanwhile features the same hardware specs, but with a few differences. It’s available in Pearl White and Gold or Obsidian Black and Silver and gives 13 hours of battery life. The Swift 5 also boasts a backlit keyboard touch capability, and a fingerprint scanner.

The Swift 3 pairs a 14-inch HD or Full HD display with 6th or 7th Generation Intel Core processors, fast 512GB SSDs, and up to 8GB memory. Additional include a USB 3.1 Type-C port an optional backlit keyboard, and a large 72mm touchpad.

The Swift 1 is the budget-friendly version of the line with up to 12 hours of battery.It features a 14-inch HD display, an Intel Pentium or Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM, and either 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of eMMC storage.

All four notebooks will be available in  North America in October with prices starting as follows: 

Acer Swift 7 - US $999
Acer Swift 5 - US $749
Acer Swift 3 - US $499
Acer Swift 1 US $249


Other devices

Aside from the laptops launched, Acer also officially announced a new customisable computer being released, the Revo Base Mini PC. The portable computer can be equipped with up to an Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB DDR3 RAM, up to 1TB HDD or 256GB SSD, with an additional SD card slot for up to 256GB. The system also packs a Display and HDMI port, with integrated Intel HD graphics, four USB 3.1 ports, and 802.11ac wireless connectivity.The Revo Base Mini PC will be available in Europoe, the Middle East, and Africa early next year for approximately Rs 32,000.

And finally, the last and most interesting launch from Acer is a new VR headset, developed in partnership with Starbreeze AB. The StarVR headset, has begun shipping to IMAX Corporation in preparation for the opening of the IMAX VR Center in Los Angeles, expected later this year, and others in the near future. The headset will be available to consumers in 2017.
