The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently released a video showcasing the capability of a new-generation ordinance they have developed: a bullet that is able to guide itself, mid-flight, to hit a target.

The bullet, from the EXACTO (Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance) program, works even for targets that are moving and accelerating, a feat made possible with the .50-calibre bullet’s highly miniaturized onboard imaging and guidance systems. The technology packed into each bullet enables it to compensate for a variety of real-world environmental factors including wind, gravity and target motion. This development increases the state of the art by a large factor, enabling far higher accuracy that has been possible until now.

DARPA released a video of the bullet in action, demonstrating its ability to course-correct mid-trajectory, with equal accuracy in the case of it being shot both by experienced as well a first-time shooter.
