Google issued a statement saying that its accounts are safe and there is nothing to worry about. "The security of users' information is top priority for us. We have no evidence that our systems have been compromised, but whenever we become aware that accounts may have been we take steps to help those users secure  their accounts."

For tighter security of personal email accounts, Google allows for and recommends a two-step verification process linking a user's email account to their personal phone number.
