BioBot is a 3D bioprinter that builds living tissues from human cells. Krishna Bahirwani speaks to Danny Cabrera, the brain behind, at TedXGateway.
Where does a user get the human cells to print the living tissue?
"We do not supply living cells, these are commercially available from a variety of vendors or obtained directly from patients."
What inspired you to create the BioBot?
"I am constantly inspired by the beauty, complexity and power of living things. We're not very good at understanding life and we're even worse at using it to build amazing things that benefit human beings. We're changing that at BioBots. The BioBot 1 3D bioprinter is the first product to give biology a digital interface, we are making biology easier to design and engineer. We're creating a future where we can design living systems with the goal of curing disease, eliminating the organ waiting list, remediating the environment, and living on other planets."
What kind of a background would you need to be able to use the BioBot?
"We're making bioprinting as easy as possible. Anyone currently working in a lab doing 2D tissue culture has the background to effectively use a BioBot 1 3D bioprinter to fabricate 3D living tissues that are better mimics of the human body."
Coming from humble beginnings, tell us a little bit about your journey to becoming one of the most recognized people in the field?
"I started BioBots with a friend a little over a year ago right after I graduated from college. Our strategy has always been to surround ourselves with the best, brightest people that we really respect and enjoy working with. We have forged partnerships with the best universities in the world, we're working with the top researchers in tissue engineering, our products have crossed the deepest oceans and are being used all over the world. It's exciting to be at the forefront of an exciting new technology, but we're not building this company for recognition, we're building tools that empower people to build with life, and that's what gets us excited."
How is your work with Bioprinting going to help with personalized medicine?
"We have a number of clients working towards building 3D tissues out of a patient's own cells to test drugs. It's an extremely exciting future we're creating, where drugs are designed for individuals and tested on 3D bioprinted tissues built out of a patient's own cells, rather than drugs that are tested on rats and designed for millions of people."
