A statue of a Jain saint dating to the 11th century has been unearthed at a village near Vedaranyam in the district by a team of historians.

Measuring 60cm in height and 47cm in width, the headless statue has a lion on its right side.

It was discovered at Panchanathikulam village by a team from Tamil University, Thanjavur during field studies.

The team members said Jain and Buddhist statues had been unearthed several times in the past in Nagapattnam and Vedaranyam areas.

the team was headed by University superintendent Jambulingam and Tamil professor Govindarajan.
