Lunar eclipse 2021: The new year 2021 is here and it will be an exciting one for the stargazers. The astronomy enthusiasts will get to witness many events this year, including multiple eclipses. Many must already be looking forward to the first lunar eclipse of 2021.

An eclipse is a natural event that occurs when a space body blocks light from or to another astronomical body. A lunar eclipse takes place when the planet Earth's shadow blocks the sun's light that the moon otherwise reflects.

According to scientists, people across the world will get to witness two lunar eclipses in 2021. The first lunar eclipse of the year will take place on May 26.

The lunar eclipse on May 26 will be 'total' but it will only be considered a 'shadow' eclipse in India. The stargazers in India will get to witness the eclipse but it will not be visible throughout the country.

The first lunar eclipse of 2021 will also be visible from South Asia, North America, South America, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Antarctica.

As for the time, the space enthusiasts can witness the first lunar eclipse only during a brief period in the early evening. According to the Indian Standard Time (IST), it will last from 2:17 pm to 7:19 pm.

The second and the final lunar eclipse of 2021 will be seen on November 19.

For those who believe in astrology, the lunar eclipse is important in another manner as it is believed to have an impact on their lives. Under the concept of 'sootak', it is believed by some that no significant work should be initiated during the period of the eclipse. Some other norms are also followed during this period.

It should be noted that the 'sootak' period will not be considered during the first lunar eclipse of 2021 on May 26 as it will be a shadow eclipse.
