The Full Moon of July will shine brightly on July 23 at 10:36 pm. The near-full moon will make a close pass of Saturn on July 24 and Jupiter on July 25. At that moment, the Sun, the Earth and the Moon will be in perfect alignment, but because the moon is about 5 degrees off the plane of Earth's orbit, the sun's light will fall fully on the moon's side facing Earth.

Popularly known as Buck Moon and Thunder Moon

The Full Moon in July is popularly known as Buck Moon, as the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. It was named by Algonquin tribes, as a tribute to the buck deer that generally tend to grow their new antlers at the start of summer, in July. The moon is also known as the Thunder Moon due to the frequent thunderstorms that are common in summer. It also has an unusual reddish-orange colour.

Alignment with Saturn and Jupiter

On June 24, the moon will move four degrees south of Saturn in the dawn sky. Both the moon and Saturn will be visible together in the constellation Capricornus.
Then the moon will travel four more degrees south and align with Jupiter on June 25. The moon will appear near Jupiter on Sunday morning near dawn, similar to the moon’s alignment with Saturn on Saturday. Viewers can see the moon and Jupiter with the naked eye or a pair of binoculars in the constellation Aquarius.
