SMC to spruce up heritage buildings to attract tourists

Civic body has identified 3,039 buildings and will begin work soon.

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has now taken up the task of restoring heritage and historical value of old buildings and monuments in Surat. The civic body has decided to formulate policies to restore edifices with heritage values.

In a recent survey conducted, the SMC has rounded of on 3,039 such buildings. Once the blue print of the project is prepared, SMC will come up with a policy for restoration.

SMC’s new policy for edifices will focus on restoring and developing the buildings with heritage value into tourist destinations. In the first phase of the plan, a survey was conducted by Urban Space Consultant which was given a contract by SMC. Of these, 2,474 in the old city. The consultant presented details of the survey along with numbers before SMC officials in meeting held recently.

Edifices have been classified according to their historical value, current occupancy situation and type of construction.

Sources said that based on information, another consultant named Urban Management Consultant will prepare a draft and later, SMC will prepare a policy for restoration of these old buildings. At present out of 3,039, only important buildings will be selected for the project.

CY Bhatt, assistant municipal commissioner said that edifices in new areas like Dumas, Katargam, Bhimpore, Variyav, Amroli and Singanpore will be also be considered for the project.

“Issues such as classification of buildings, delivering assistance, and evacuating occupants from it will be the protocol for each edifice.

Once the policy is framed we can select buildings and start our work or outsource it to an agency. The aim is to attract tourists to these buildings and make them aware of the city’s rich heritage and culture,” Bhatt added.
