A few days ago, a girl killed her 52-year-old mother with the help of her boyfriend, after the mother caught the couple alone at home. In another case that has recently come to light, a Delhi woman and her boyfriend allegedly kept the woman’s 72-year-old mother captive for two years to seize her property.

Neelam Rani, 55, a widow, first shifted to her mother Santosh’s West Delhi home. Soon, her boyfriend Rajiv Kumar joined them there. They took Santosh to Bhatinda, where she was kept captive and occasionally beaten up. She was also not allowed to make any calls. All this was allegedly done to force Santosh to sign papers that would enable Neelam and Rajiv to seize the mother’s West Delhi property, worth crores.

The incident came to light when Santosh fell ill, was brought back to Delhi and contacted her son, Shimender Pal, who filed a complaint with the West Delhi police station. Before this, Shimender said he never found it unusual that his mother had not contacted him in a long time. “I thought she was in safe hands,” he said.

In her complaint to the police, Santosh alleged that her daughter Neelam contacted her three years ago and started living with her in Paschim Vihar. “Neelam then brought her friend Rajiv Kumar from Bhatinda, who, too, started living with us. They had blocked my movements,” she alleged in her complaint. “I want action against my daughter and her boyfriend for seizing my property in Delhi and Bhatinda,” Santosh said.

Meanwhile, Shimender alleged that the police were reluctant to lodge an FIR. “We were asked to go to court. The police officer told us, ‘Go anywhere with your case, we will not register.’” We even approached the Senior Citizens’ Cell, but to no avail,” Shimender said.

“It is a family dispute. How can a daughter kidnap her mother? We cannot register an FIR on the basis of an allegation,” a senior police officer said. “We will take action if her daughter and friend are found guilty.”

The Meera Bagh Resident’s Welfare Association has, however, come forward to help Santosh. “We will provide Santosh with legal and financial help so that she can fight her battle against her daughter,” a resident of the area said.
