Dr Mukund Bajaj is fortunate but he is perhaps the last candidate to get admission to a super-speciality course without having a post-graduate degree recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Bajaj retained his seat at Grant Medical College because the Bombay High Court did not feel it fit to take away his seat after he had completed a year in the course. Also, the MCI had said that the seat could not be given to any other candidate after the admissions were completed.

In an affidavit filed before the court, Bajaj who completed his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Ambejogai Medical College had said earlier too candidates were admitted to super-speciality courses though they did not have degrees recognised by the MCI.

He cited the names of five other candidates from various years who had been admitted to super-speciality courses in the state. Bajaj was ranked 7th on the common super-speciality entrance test held in June 2008. But the five doctors who filed a petition in the Bombay High Court had objected to his admission saying he completed his post-graduation from a college that was not recognised by the MCI.

The petitioning doctors were not ranked among the first 10 in the entrance test. But they said if ineligible candidates like Bajaj were struck off the list, they stood a better chance of making it to the course.
