A 'bookie' was arrested in the national capital for allegedly killing a young woman, to whom he had lent about Rs 15 lakh to open a beauty parlour, in the presence of her husband and child, police said on Friday.

Sanjeev Kumar Mahajan (44), who was absconding since February 22 after the incident, was arrested on Thursday and a small firearm was recovered from him, Additional Commissioner (Crime) Satyendra Garg told reporters here.

Pinki (25) was allegedly shot dead by Mahajan on KDR Road near Jehangirpuri. The victim, her husband Suranjit Singh and their child were picked up from their home by Mahajan after an argument over money.

He had been demanding for return of the money he funded for the beauty parlour in Patel Nagar which was run by Pinki.

According to Mahajan, she not only refused to return the money but allegedly threatened to file a rape case against him.

Mahajan, then, took them in his car and while travelling, another argument broke out and in a fit of rage, he allegedly pumped three bullets into Pinki and fled.

Police have recovered a pistol, the licence of which lapsed in April this year.

Mahajan, who was allegedly into cricket betting, was arrested from a bus stand in the vicinity of AIIMS on Thursday.

During interrogation, police claimed Mahajan told investigators that he is a graduate who is into cricket betting for quite some time.

Mahajan was known to Pinki for one-and-half year while she used to work in a saloon named GStar at Patel Nagar where he was a frequent visitor, Garg said.

According to Mahajan, a deep friendship developed between him and Pinki.

Later, Mahajan helped Pinki in opening a beauty parlour at Patel Nagar in partnership and the woman allegedly borrowed a large amount of money from him.

Mahajan later ran into financial difficulties and asked Pinki to repay some money to which she started making "false excuses". She also insisted that the accused should helped her in buying an independent house for the family, police said.
