People of the Himalayan region will celebrate the 74th birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on July 6 and a "grand" function in his honour will be organised in the national capital, a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) said on Friday.

"A grand and befitting function will jointly be organised in New Delhi by various organisations of the Himalayan region in honour of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on the occasion of his 74th birthday on July 6, coinciding his 50th year in India," NCST member Tsering Samphel said.

"The function will be organised to pay His Holiness a grateful tribute from the people of the Himalayan region of India for his unstinting contribution in promoting peace, prosperity, friendship, brotherhood and human values among the people of the region in particular and the world in general ..." he added.

The decision to organise the function was taken in a meeting, held on Thursday here, in which prominent leaders from the Himalayan region took part, Samphel, who was made convener of the organising committee of the programme, said.
