Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare said on Wednesday that he has copies of letters written by slain Congressman Pawanraje Nimbalkar to then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and the Osmanabad district superintendent of police claiming that NCP leader Padamsinh Patil — now a member of Parliament from Osmanabad district — had threatened to kill him.

Hazare was speaking to DNA while reacting to a statement by Padamsinh Patil that a person of Hazare’s stature should not make baseless allegations without any proof. In a statement, Patil said that Hazare was being misled with false documents to malign his image.

Patil’s name has figured in the murder case. Main accused Parasmal Jain has told the police that Mohan Shukla, a co-accused who was arrested by the CBI on Monday, had given him the supari (contract) to murder Nimbalkar by stating that relations between Padamsinh Patil and Nimbalkar had become strained. Nimbalkar was shot dead in 2006.

Hazare said that Patil had threatened Nimbalkar’s parents also, warning them to caution their son to remain silent.  “Otherwise, I know how to silence him forever,” Patil told Nimbalkar’s parents, according to Hazare.

Hazare said that during the hearing before the justice PB Sawant inquiry commission on the alleged irregularities at the Terana co-operative sugar factory, Patil had accused him of making baseless allegations without any proof. “I have spoken about the Nimbalkar case this time because I have proof,” he said.

Hazare said Patil was lying that he did not know Satish Mandade well. Mandade has also been arrested in the murder case. “Mandade was involved in Patil’s Lok Sabha campaign. Patil helped Mandade run the Terana cooperative sugar factory distillery. How can Patil say that Mandade was just an acquaintance and not a close associate,” Hazare asked.

Hazare maintained that Patil is criminal-minded and had threatened his lawyer during the hearing before the justice Sawant commission. “I had complained about this to justice Sawant,” Hazare said.
