Two non-political organisations in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday demanded immediate release of Ansari Commission's report on the anti-Sikh riots in Jammu in 1989 in which 14 Sikhs were allegedly killed on the occasion of  Gurpurab and punishment for its perpetrators.

Raising the demand at a joint press conference here People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and Sikh Progressive Front (SPF) leaders alleged that despite the submission of the report on the riots by the Commission within a year it was still kept under wraps.

"We demand release of the Commision's report without further delay and punishment to the perpetrators of the riots that occurred on January 13, 1989, PUCL Convenor Balraj Puri and SPF President Balvinder Singh told reporters. They also expressed their dissatisfaction over non-payment of full compensation to those who suffered monetary losses and damage to their property and business during the riots.

The Commission conducted a probe into the circumstances that led to the killing of 14 innocent Sikhs in the course of a Gurpurab procession on January 13, 1989 in Jammu. The two leaders claimed that the riots were the handiwork of a handful of "fanatics" which could have been "prevented if the authorities had not abdicated their responsibility."
