Junior men's hockey team to leave for Singapore on Tuesday

The Indian junior men's hockey team left from here for the national capital from where they would take a flight to Singapore on Tuesday, to take part in the ninth Junior World Cup hockey tournament, scheduled to be held from June 7-21.

The 18-member team led by Diwakar Ram boarded the Shatabdi Express from here on Monday night to New Delhi from where they will fly to Singapore, team sources said here today. Twenty countries will take part in the competition which is jointly hosted by Malaysia and Singapore, they said.

The Indian team had been participating in the practice camp in the Sports Authority of India (SAI) located at Goragaon here for the last three months before departing,
sources said. The players took part in practice under the guidance of coach A K Bansal and concentrated on playing an attacking game and sharpening their penalty corner skills, they said.

India won the tournament, that began in 1979 only, once in 2001 when it defeated Argentina by 6-1 in the finals. The team will play its first match against Singapore on
June 8, while other fixtures are scheduled on June 9, 11 and 12 against New Zealand, Netherlands and Poland respectively, they said.
