It was the turn of Gujarati minds on Wednesday to be ignited by the thoughts of former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, at the first convocation of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU). A visionary, Kalam presented his 'Vision 2030', in which he envisaged India as being fossil-fuel free by 2030 and independent when it came to energy.

"It is estimated that available resources of fossil fuels will be exhausted within the next 50 to 100 years as they are non-renewable. Carbon dioxide created by burning of these fuels is damaging the atmosphere," said Kalam, who has authored many books including 'Ignited Minds'.

He said that we can protect the atmosphere by working towards a 'fossil
fuel-free energy system', which is the goal of energy independence by 2030.

"We should work towards self-reliance in the case of fuel, oil and gas. This is important considering the heavy fluctuations in the price of crude oil," he said.

It is pertinent to note that oil prices rose from $25 per barrel in September 2003 to $147 in 2008, and have now fallen to $60 per barrel.

Kalam said that based on the development profile and progress visualised for India over the next two decades, the power generation capacity needs to increase to 4 lakh MW by 2030, from the current figure of 1.5 lakh MW.

Energy independence needs to be achieved through three different sources, namely renewable energy (solar, wind and hydro power), electrical power from nuclear energy and biofuel for the transport sector.

Chief minister Narendra Modi said that Gujarat, which is the industrial hub of India, should now be established as an academic hub, where intellectuals, researchers and innovators congregate. Dr Kalam and Modi had earlier conferred petroleum management degrees on 120 students of the 2006-08 and 2007-09 batches, while six students from both batches were awarded medals for scholastic performance. Mukesh Ambani, chairman of the PDPU board of governors, was scheduled to preside over the function, but did not turn up.
