The next time you struggle to get hold of a cylinder of cooking gas, this small battery-operated wood gas stove can come to your rescue. Economical as well as eco-friendly, the battery that this stove runs on is charged by pulling and releasing a cord.

The wood gas stove is part of three-piece kit developed by Shreelal Jha, technical director of Sardar Patel University’s physics department at Vallabh Vidyanagar. The rest of the ‘Self Reliant Kit’ is formed by two lamps, which also run on the energy generated through the movement of the cord.

Jha said that the rights to his product have already been purchased a firm called Super Nova Technologies.

The technique that powers the stove is simple. The hand-operated power generator is charged by pulling and releasing the cord attached to it. This charge is then stored in a battery, which can then be used to provide lighting, play radios in addition to powering the wood stove, thus rendering the user self sufficient.

“To charge the battery, one has to pull the cord and release it a few times. The movement generates energy that is stored in the battery. The battery charged for an hour can light lamps for up to four hours,” Jha said.

The generator forms an alternate source of power, as it is not dependent on natural sources of energy such as the sun, wind and water. The kit, in turn, can be used instead of a solar lantern, solar box cooker and micro wind generator in dense forests, valleys, fishing boats, remote areas and mountain camps, and as a natural disaster kit; it can be of vital importance in emergencies.

To use the wood stove, it needs to be connected to the battery. “The best thing is that the stove needs less wood and solid waste. It does not generate much smoke, making it eco- and health-friendly. Moreover, it saves electricity and can be used anywhere,” Jha said.

He said that smoke in generated only when the temperature reaches 200 degree Celsius. “Because of a small fan in the wood stove, the temperature does not go that high. Therefore, the amount of smoke is very less,” he said.
