Two young Nigerians, suspected to have duped over 30 people in Kolkata of about Rs 40 lakh by promising them internet lottery wins, were arrested in the national capital, police said today.

Earnest Ucheuna Ughabuga (31) and Anthony Obinawa (27) were caught by Delhi Police's Crime Branch yesterday following a tip off provided by their Kolkata counterparts. Another man from a north-eastern state, residing in west Delhi, who allegedly operated the bank account in which money was transfered, is absconding, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Satyendra Garg told reporters here.

The Kolkata Police's Detective Branch had sought their Delhi counterparts' help after they received a complaint from one Sunanda Banerjee that she was duped by some one of Rs 1.22 lakh by claiming that she had won a lottery of USD 50,000.

"Kolkata police further received over 30 similar complaints in the past fortnight. They sought our help after finding a trail of the crime in the national capital," Garg said.  Banerjee was informed through mail that she had won the lottery of Britian-based Shell Petroleum Development Company and asked her to deposit Rs 1.22 lakh as processing fee.

She was also informed that the company president Ben John Kennedy will come to India to hand over the prize money. Banerjee was asked to keep the information secret
until her claims had been processed and her money remitted to her account, Garg said.

The email explained that this procedure was part of the company's security protocol to avoid double claiming and unwarranted abuse of their programme by others. To process her claim, Banerjee was also asked to contact their Claims Manager on a mobile number.

"When she called she was congratulated and requested to deposit the money in an ICICI bank account. After she deposited the money, she realised that she had been fooled," Garg said. Ughabuga and Obinawa had come to India on student visas with the former reaching the country on February 26 this year and the latter on January ten this year.
