A court here has sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping his daughter and directed the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to prepare a
rehabilitation plan for the minor victim, who has been living at a shelter home since four years.

Additional sessions judge Sanjeev Aggarwal came to the rescue of the 13-year-old girl, noting that her mother had already expired and there was no one from the family coming
forward to take up her responsibility.

"The court cannot sit as a mute spectator in such cases, where not only a minor girl has been ravished, but at the same time the entire conscience of the society has been shaken.

"The said victim, who had the ignominy of being raped by his real father and at the same time she has left alone in Nari Niketan (women's shelter home) fighting for herself to come to terms with the realities of life, needs sympathy, care and proper rehabilitation," the court said.

It asked the DCW to come up with a constructive rehabilitation plan for the welfare of the girl by providing her proper educational and vocational skills so that she could stand on her own feet and meet the challenges in the future.

The convict Sanjay Yadav, who has been in judicial custody since November 27, 2005 following his arrest on an FIR with Sultanpuri police station by the girl, alleging rape for
past five months, has also been imposed with a fine of Rs5,000 by the court.
