One-year-old Anusha is too young to understand the tragedy that has befallen her family. On Monday morning she was orphaned as her parents were fatally knocked down from their two-wheeler by a speeding lorry on Magadi Main Road.

Businessman Rudresh (35) and his wife Rekha (30) were heading towards Basavesvaranagar from their residence at Bharatinagar in BEML when the mishap happened, police said.

A speeding lorry rammed into the scooter the couple was riding from behind, as Rudresh stopped the two-wheeler at the Kotigepalya traffic signal. The couple was killed on the spot, police said.

Rudresh was running a tool and dye making unit in KHB Colony, Basaveswaranagar, while Rekha had a beauty parlour in the same locality. They were on their way to work when the lorry hit them. Rekha’s brother Chandrashekar said that Rudresh used to drop his wife off daily at the beauty parlour.

“Their daughter Anusha used to stay with her grandmother in Bharat Layout. The orphaned girl has been crying for her parents. My mother is now inconsolable,” he said.
Chandrashekar added that Anusha’s first birthday was celebrated three months ago.

The couple have been married for the last three years. Nagesh, the lorry driver, was arrested and produced before a court.

The driver blamed brake failure for the accident, which the police refuted. A case of negligent and rash driving was filed against Nagesh.

In another incident, a 67-year-old man was killed when a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus ran over him near Nataraja Theatre Circle on Sunday night.
Police said the man, Muniswamy of Sriramapuram, was crossing the road when the public transport bus hit him. Muniswamy died on the spot.

His body was handed over to his relatives after a post-mortem examination at the Victoria Hospital. Police have filed a case and are investigating.
