Royal Challengers Bangalore making it to the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) second season in South Africa on Sunday caught punters on the wrong foot.

“Season 2 saw an overwhelmingly upward trend for bookies,” said a bookie on condition of anonymity. “With the Challengers making it to the finals, it has elevated them even higher.”

When the tournament began, the Royal Challengers were available at Rs30, but on Sunday, they were being quoted at Re0.80.

In all, over Rs5,000 crore were exchanged during the championship. “The championship has been a no-man’s game,” said the bookie. “It was worse than race betting; none of the pre-tournament favourites made it to the final. This was good for the bookies.”

According to the bookie, there was only one person from Bangalore who had invested Rs50,000 on a Royal Challengers win and, for a long time, it looked like he would be the only punter to make money.

Even before the first ball could be bowled in the final match, over Rs100 crore were exchanged for the toss, with the punters favouring the Deccan Chargers. But the Challengers won
the toss.

All the pre-championship tips about the teams were turned on their heads, and it was the punters who found themselves at the wrong end of the results, a bookie said happily.
