An 11-year-old boy underwent a surgery for appendicitis at a private hospital in Cuttack in 2006. The surgery was a success and all went well till earlier this month when he complained of acute abdominal pain. During diagnosis it was found that one of his kidneys was missing. Cuttack Police have detained the doctor who conducted the surgery for appendicitis.

Abinash Sharma’s parents allege that the doctor removed his right kidney during surgery at a Cuttack-based private hospital on October 31, 2006. Abinash was in hospital for 11 days. The boy had no complaints after surgery. Every thing was normal till he complained of acute pain in his abdomen some 15 days back. On diagnosis, doctors found that his right kidney was missing.

“During ultrasound it was found that my son’s right kidney was missing. We suspect the kidney was removed during the surgery in Cuttack,” Abhinash’s father Babuli Nath Sharma said. He believes the kidney has been missing ever since Dr BN Mishra of Poly Hospital and Nursing Home conducted the surgery for appendicitis in 2006.

“Both his kidneys were intact during ultrasound before surgery, Sharma said. “We are poor people. The doctor might have removed the kidney and sold it. I need justice and my son’s kidney back,” he said.

Cuttack DCP Amitendra Sinha said a medical team has been constituted to examine Abinash’s health. “We have already seized all documents from the nursing home. Everything will be clear soon,” he said. Calling the allegations baseless, Mishra wondered why the allegations were being framed two and half years after the surgery.

He alleged there was some ulterior motive.
