The construction of the grand statue of Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj will commence after the monsoons are over (September-October) and the architect firm will be chosen from two who are currently shortlisted. The tender process, which is also under way, is yet to be completed.

The actual site of the statue has been shifted 50 metres south and will now stand opposite the Police Gymkhana, which lies between Marine Lines and Charni Road stations.

Of the 11 entries received by the state government, three were invited to make a presentation to CM Ashok Chavan at Mantralaya on Thursday.  Of them, one was eliminated while certain suggestions and modifications were made to the other two.

Chavan has directed the state Public Works Department to finalise the design by next month and start the tendering process immediately after that so that the project work can begin. The monument is planned on six acres at an estimated cost of Rs300 crore.
The shortlisted firms are PG Patki and Associates, and Bensely Design Studios Team One Architects of Thailand. The design submitted by the former has a traditional look and is expected to be finalised; the latter has a more modern look, according to an official from the General Administration Department.

An additional budgetary allocation of Rs100 crore has been approved. The estimated cost of the project is pegged at Rs200 crore, which will be borne by the state.

The PWD has shifted the site towards the south from the original site planned. “We had to shift by nearly 50 metres as the earlier site was obstructed by submarine telecom wires,” said PWD chief architect Bipin Sankhe. The statue will stand 309 feet at its highest point, including a pedestal of 153 feet.

A museum containing literature and artefacts showcasing the era of the Maratha king will come up at the base of the statue, besides an amphitheatre.
