The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss) has become a partner in a consortium of 12 European universities and eight Indian universities.

It is an academic mobility scheme and partnership for education, research and development.

“Such a large-scale scholarship is being offered by European universities for the first time. It will facilitate the mobility of 300 students and teachers from India to European universities. Around 100 from European universities will come to India. Tiss has always laid emphasis on bilateral exchanges and this is another step in that direction,” said Dr Neela Dabir, chairperson, International Students’ Office, Tiss.

Called the “Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window”, the scholarship, fellowship and academic exchange programme is being financed by the European Union.

Led by Lund University (Sweden), the consortium has received a grant of 9.6 million Euros. “It will be a great opportunity for students and teachers,” said Dabir.

While six Tiss students have received fellowships for MPhil and PhD programmes, another six have been selected to pursue masters in universities across Europe.

All students’ programmes will be ranging from 6 to 34 months. Four faculty members will get to work at the European universities for duration of 2 to 4 months. The mobility of students and faculty will start from September 2009. Tiss students have opted for programmes like public health, international humanitarian aid, social and organisational leadership, disaster management, education and HR management.

Under the grant, students from India pursuing masters programmes will get 1,000 Euros, PhD students will get 1,500 Euros and faculty will get 2,500 Euros every month. Other institutes in the consortium include University of Delhi, Jadavpur University (Kolkata), University of Pune and IIT, Kanpur.
