A Nissan sports car, allegedly hurtling at a speed of 100-plus km an hour, killed Janardhan Kanaje on Sunday evening.

The 40-year-old milkman from Goregaon was riding home on his bicycle when the car rammed into him around 8 pm, on the service road near Sambhaji Nagar, Vile Parle (east). He died on the spot.

The car then hit an auto-rickshaw, injuring its driver, Sanjay Tiwari. "Tiwari has suffered multiple fractures and a serious head injury," said sub-inspector Govind Desai of Vile Parle police station. "He is in Cooper Hospital, and his condition is still critical." Vinod Kumar Mishra, Tiwari's brother-in-law who witnessed the mishap, said that the car heading towards Andheri was being driven very recklessly.

"After the accident, furious locals stopped the car and beat up the driver and his companion. They also smashed the windshield of the vehicle," said sub inspector Vijay Mane.

The police have seized the car (MH 04 AX 2171). A case under sections 304(a), 338 and 279 of the IPC, for rash and negligent driving, was filed against Mihir Dharkar, 21, who was at the wheel. Dharkar, a resident of Amarnath Tower on Yari Road, Andheri (west), told the cops that he was relative of an MP from Vidarbha, said sources.

Both Dharkar and Sujit Pardesi, 26, who was with him in the car, was badly beaten up by the residents. They were taken to VN Desai Hospital for treatment.
