The row over the status of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI)-Tech off-campus centre in Bangalore is snowballing into a bigger controversy.

Over 160 students of IV semester Masters in Business Administration (MBA) belonging to another institute, Magnus School of Business (MSB) in JP Nagar III Phase, claiming affiliation with ICFAI Dehra Dun, boycotted exams on Tuesday over fears of their course not being recognised.

The students boycotted the exams after they sought to know from the administration whether their degrees were genuine and recognised.

Despite assurances given by the administration, the Magnus students were not satisfied after they read media reports about the plight of about 300 ICFAI-Tech students who are undergoing an ordeal over the certificates issued by their off-campus institute not being considered valid. The fears of the students are compounded by the fact that III and IV semester students of MSB get their certificates from ICFAI Dehra Dun University, like their ICFAI-Tech counterparts, who are now facing problems.

The MSB director is based out of Hyderabad. They have centres in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Bhubaneshwar, Mysore, Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Kolhapur, Pune and Kolkata.

The MSB’s MBA IV semester students have already given two exam papers — Ethics on Saturday and Business Strategy on Monday. The students were to appear for the Industrial Marketing paper on Tuesday when they read media reports and turned anxious. Though no violence was reported, the anxious students locked up one of the office-bearers of the institute seeking concrete assurance over their degree certificates being recognised.

The examination schedule includes three more papers — Service Marketing on Thursday, International Marketing on Friday, and Strategic Marketing Management on Saturday.

Ashok Bhat, MSB business head, said, “Students were upset after seeing reports in the media regarding the plight of ICFAI-Tech Bangalore students today. They wanted to know if their degrees are genuine and have value. The management has assured them that the MBA programme is recognised. We expect that exams will be conducted as planned.”

Students had paid hostel fees

Following the violence on the campus of ICFAI-Tech at NS Palya, 82 students staying as paying guests have been served eviction notices.

DNA has copies of receipts of the security deposit and rent paid till April by students to Keshav Bhat, proprietor, on a letter head of the Mangalore Trading Company.

“Mr Bhat told us that he will deduct a month’s rent for May and return the rest of our security deposit,” Chirag, a student said.

Initially, students had been planning to vacate the premises by the end of May. They had informed Bhat of their plans. However, following the violence that was widely reported in the press, the owner of the premises, HM Krishnappa, asked students to vacate their rooms immediately. Each of the students paid rent of Rs4,200 per month
