Focusing on the burgeoning digital economy and aimed specifically at promoting the importance of digital identity and information security solutions in both India and the UK, the two-day International Conference on Security and Identity Management (SIM 2009) began on Monday at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

The conference is part of a joint research project between the two countries in the area of information security and identity management. Supported by Research Councils UK, the conference brought together international experts from academia and industry to build a new science network with focus on both fields, between India and the UK.

Among other delegates, the event witnessed the presence of assistant dean of e-learning at City University of London, Muttukrishnan Rajarajan; executive chairperson of IIM-A’s Telecom Centre of Excellence, Rekha Jain; and head of information systems at the University of Warwick, Wendie Currie. Ahmedabad mayor Kanaji Thakore inaugurated the conference.

“Through the conference, we aim to explore security and identity frameworks and solutions in order to protect the next generation of information technology applications in both India and the UK,” IIM-A professor and SIM 2009 chairperson, Rajanish Dass said.

Addressing the conference, he said that individuals and organisations were looking to make optimum use of benefits that can be expected to be derived from a digital economy. “However, there is a critical concern regarding identity and information theft by digital hackers, which is bothering all stakeholders of the digital economy,” he said.

The conference had talks and presentations on topics related to identity and security like national identity, technology perspectives, legal and regulatory issues, business and managerial issues, and social and economic implications of security management. “The conference will be used as a forum to identify and present several security and identity challenges across the globe, to address better the ‘gap in the digital economy market’,” Dass said.
