With the steady rise of vehicular traffic in the city, police personnel manning the traffic on the busy city streets are increasingly getting exposed to all kinds of health hazards.

Occupational demands, such as the need to stand on the street junctions for more than eight hours at a stretch amidst polluting fumes and exhaust from zooming vehicles, blaring horns and scorching heat have started to take toll on their health. They are getting exposed to various kinds of health conditions and ailments, ranging from hearing loss to hypertension.

For the traffic personnel, manning the city’s increasingly chaotic traffic is not an easy job and many a times they fall ill. “Unless citizens get aware of traffic rules and regulations traffic problems will continue,” said JCP Traffic, Atul Karwal while speaking at the workshop organised by the traffic department in collaboration with Mission Health Multispeciality Physiotherapy Centre.

Talking on the sidelines Karwal told DNA, that in order to make people aware of traffic rules and regulations, the traffic department had imparted training to 30 teachers from Gujarat Law Society (GLS), a few months ago. He also said that as soon as the model code of conduct comes to end, similar training would be imparted to teachers from other school including, Mount Carmel school.

Stating that most of the traffic personnel suffer mainly from dehydration, Karwal rued the absence of kiosks at most of the traffic points which add to the traffic personnel’s woes. The JCP further said that it has been found that many a times there are no water facility at points where traffic personnel are on duty and to quench their thirst they have to go far way leaving their traffic points.
