A day after the Gujarat high court issued a notification about appointment of judges for the fast-track courts which will try nine riot cases, court authorities are gearing up to send documents related to the Naroda Patia, Naroda gam and Gulbarg Society riot cases to these courts.

“The Naroda gam case papers are likely to be sent on May 29. However, the date for the trial is still not known. The Gulbarg case papers will be sent anytime. It is possible that this case will be clubbed with the case being investigated by the SIT,” sources said.

Supplementary chargesheets in the aforesaid cases have already been filed by the SIT in the metropolitan court.  SIT has also filed a fresh chargesheet in the Naroda gam case, in which former minister Maya Kodnani is one of the main accused. The team has also filed a fresh chargesheet in Naroda Patia case.

A highly-placed source told DNA, “It is likely that these case papers will be sent for trial within 10 days or so. Once the trial commences, the designated courts will try the matter. However, this will take at least a month.”

According to the notification of the high court, additional sessions judge, PR Patel, has been designated to conduct trial for the Godhra train carnage case, to be held on the premises of Sabarmati Central Jail. Judge SH Vora and additional sessions judge Jyotsna Yagnik will be presiding over the trial of Naroda gam and Naroda Patia cases respectively.
