The Indian blogosphere is gearing up for war. Bloggers from Delhi have launched a frontal assault on Mumbai for its perceived lack of a sprit of citizenship, as proved by the low voter turnout during polling on April 30. They are one up on newspapers, where reams of analysis have appeared on why Delhi voted and Mumbai didn’t.

On May 7, the day Delhi went to the polls, Ankur, a Delhi-based blogger, wrote a post exhorting his city’s folks to exercise their franchise. “Let’s do better than Mumbai, shall we? (Gaaa! I won’t be able to vote since my name is not on the electoral lists yet.),” he wrote in the post titled ‘Vote or die’.

Once polling got over, the irony was not lost on anyone: while Mumbai, after 26/11, was expected to reach the booths in huge numbers to vote, it was Delhi that recorded its highest turnout in two decades.

“After incidents like the 26/11 and the inflation, and the related outrage and anger in people, we were pretty sure that Mumbai elections will be the most interesting ones. But who is at fault?” a posting reads (sic) on the Youth ki Awaaz blog.

Another, on the Mental Syrup blog reads (sic): “...talking about the ipl, what’s with the ‘mumbai indians’; are you mumbaikars first and indians later? or indians first and then mumbaikars? or is the identity of the nation subservient to that of the city? or vice versa? or is it an identity crisis? or am i just rambling?”

As no one expects Mumbai’s netizens, known for their deep-rooted activism, to take things lying down, watch this space for the latest in this battle of barbs.
