In the wake of the death of an eight-year-old girl in a private hospital here reportedly due to dengue, SMC health department has claimed that there are no cases of dengue in the city.

Civic health officials said that checks were conducted in the Vrundavan Society, where the girl, Shreya Shah,  lived, and other nearby areas, but no cases of dengue were found.

The health officials conducted checks on Wednesday at Shreya's house in Vrindavan Society at Bhestan. They did not find any larva or presence of dengue mosquitos in the house. They, then, initiated checks in all 338 houses of the society, but no sign of dengue was noticed.

"There are no cases of even fever in the society, which shows that there is no infectious disease in the area. We have instructed the residents to intimate the civic body if any suspected case is detected in the area. We have also started checks in other parts of the city, which are said to be prone to the infectious disease," Hemant Desai, medical officer of SMC, said.

He added that Shreya was not suffering from dengue. Instead, she had died of  typhoid. It became clear when we got a copy of her treatment details, he said.

To prevent spread of any infectious disease in the city, SMC's health department has decided to strengthen its surveillance system and checks in the residential areas of the city.
