Deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Brijesh Kumar Jha has said that the atrocity complaint against Gujarat University vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi can be reinvestigated if fresh information is received in the case.

He further said that there was no objection to the reinvestigation on aspects pointed out by the complainant.

In his reply to the metropolitan court, which had earlier issued a contempt notice to Jha for not appearing in court, he said that the case had been investigated by assistant commissioner of police (B division) ND Parmar, who was a gazetted officer of zone I. Parmar had filed an A summary report in the case and had sent the file to Jha’s office, which had forwarded the file to the court for approval of the report.

“No application was filed in our officer by the accused or the complainant objecting to the sending of the report to court,” Jha said in his reply. He further said that his office had not shown any leniency or dereliction of duty in investigating the matter.

According to details of the case, Gujarat University senate member Pankaj Shrimali had lodged a complaint against Trivedi, accusing him of making casteist remarks against him. Trivedi had moved the Gujarat high court, praying that the complaint against him be quashed.

The petition had however been rejected and the high court had directed the police to go ahead with the enquiry on the ground that the vice-chancellor should not be arrested.
Jha had filed an application seeking permission to file an A summary report in the case on the ground that only one witness had been found in the case to corroborate the complaint. He had however not appeared in court despite repeated summons, following which the contempt notice had been issued to him.

Notices had been issued to both Jha and Parmar, the investigating office in the case, after Shrimali had challenged Jha’s application. Hearing in the matter has been deferred till May 11.
