The body of Satish Bandhu, 22, of Andheri, who drowned while picnicking at Arnala beach on Sunday, was found on Monday morning. The condition of another youth who was rescued, Malay Gawde, is said to be improving, although he is still on the respirator at a Virar hospital.

According to PSI Suresh Manore of Virar police station, Bandhu’s body was found near Arnala Fort Road around 10 am by locals. Bandhu’s relatives claimed the body after a post-mortem was conducted at a Virar government hospital, he said.

Locals blamed the large-scale sand mining off the Arnala coast for causing huge depressions that trap people, who are then unable to swim out. Ramchandra Tandel, a local fisherman, said illegal sand-lifting near the Arnala coast by the powerful Vasai-Virar builders’ lobby had led to many depressions in the area, which filled with water.

Another fisherman, Bhalchandra Tandel, demanded that a police chowki be set up which could stop people from venturing into the sea, as warnings given by locals and lifeguards often went unheeded, he said.

People go swimming after drinking and often drown, Tandel said. However, in Sunday’s case, the five went swimming after lunch, which could have been avoided, he said.
