The Supreme Court has directed the Chhattisgarh government to provide necessary medical aid to ailing PUCL activist Dr Binayak Sen, imprisoned for past 22 months on the charge of abetting and assisting Maoists in the region.

A Bench headed by justice DK Jain also issued notice to the BJP-ruled state government on Dr Sen’s plea for bail so that the paediatrician (Sen) could get treatment for heart ailment.

Dr Sen contended that there was no evidence against him to be booked under the intimidating Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

However, the state government has accused Dr Binayak Sen of involvement in Maoist activities.

Earlier this month, at least 54 citizens, some of them cardiologists and physicians from India a and abroad, sent a letter to chief justice of India KG Balakrishnan seeking ‘review’ of Sen’s case.

“Recently we learned that his (Sen’s) health had worsened and that the doctor appointed by the court to examine him recommended that he be transferred to Vellore for an angiography and perhaps, if needed, an angioplasty or coronary artery bypass graft without further delay,” the letter says.

“We believe that the court had ordered that Dr Binayak receive treatment as per the doctor’s recommendations but there are still hurdles being created by the local administration,” the letter said.

“We urge you to use your good offices to see that this order is implemented immediately, as any delay may pose a risk to Dr Binayak Sen’s life,” the letter says.
Among others who signed the letter were Keith G Davies, FRCS associate professor of neuro surgery, Boston University, Massachusetts; Dr Sudarshan Devanesen, associate professor of medicine at the University of Toronto; and Dr Anagha Amte.
