The death of more than 50 pigs in the last couple of days in Dahivad village of Amelner taluka in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra created some panic but animal husbandry officials clarified that the pigs died due to swine fever and not because of swine flu.

“In summer, swine fever is a common disease among pigs and is caused because of the heat. Swine fever is not transferable to human beings and there is no need for concern,” clarified Dr Manohar Salve, district animal husbandry officer.  Dahivad is a small village with stray pigs always roaming around. It was informed that a person was transporting some pigs for sale and had parked his truck in Dahivad, where the temperature is between 46 to 47 degrees Celsius. A few pigs died due to the heat exposure. Though the officials say they saw about 7-8 pigs dead, villagers say the figure could be more than 50.

“We have already started treatment for the pigs, including the stray ones and it will take about 15-20 days to control the outbreak of fever,” Dr Salve stated.

The dead pigs have been disposed, some sent for post mortem and the samples of the dead pigs have been sent to the Disease Investigation Centre Laboratory in Pune. The report is awaited.
