The revival of nuclear energy at the international level has led five universities in France to create a two-year master's of nuclear energy programme.

They are currently on the lookout for fresh graduates of physics/ engineering/ chemistry, especially from India. "We already into nuclear research and development with research centers in India," said Doris Neumann, international affairs officer, CEA (French atomic energy commission). Recently, the relationship between India and France is getting stronger on the nuclear energy front. Even where only France is considered, the civil nuclear programme is expanding.

"We are keen to help build the nuclear skill required by our industry," Neumann added.  According to the French industry projection, around 1000 such professionals will be required per year for the next ten years.

Set to start in September, the master's of nuclear energy programme will be delivered fully in English to around 200 students, of which around 100 will be international students. The course cost is 12000euro per year which is just over Rs8lakh for a year. Neumann informed, "The course will run through a consortium of leading Parisian institutes—Université ParisSud 11, ParisTech, Supélec, École Centrale and CEA's INSTN with the support of major nuclear energy companies, EDF, AREVA and GDF SUEZ."

Sylvain Ferrari, in-charge of interna tional development, École Polytechnique added, "The course will include a six month industry internship at the companies based on the students' specialisation area in the second year like nuclear engineering/ nuclear plant design/ operations/ fuel cycle/ decommissioning and waste management."

Ferrari added, "Students can also choose to pursue a PhD in France post the course as the French government has a full 100% funding for all those pursuing PhD."

Moreover, post this master's programme, the avenues for students will be maximised in France and India. "Today around 80% of the electricity in France is from nuclear energy and is growing. Therefore, the salaries for these much desired professionals will be anywhere between 35000 to 40000 euro per year,"  said Neumann. Further, she added, "Professionals trained through this programme will be required in India itself; as the French nuclear electricity major Areva, is set to bring around six European Pressurised Water Reactors (EPR) to India till 2020 to provide energy to Indian people.
