The Mumbai South constituency, comprising some of the most posh parts of the city, is considered a highly educated and affluent zone that is safe for women.

But a report prepared by the Praja Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, reveals that this area has had the highest number of rape cases registered in the city.

In fact, Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central, which make up the south Mumbai area, and Mumbai North Central, which is the southern part of the western suburb including localities such as Bandra, have registered over 60% of all rape cases at 124 out of 206 registrations.

It is the same for heinous crimes – murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and riots – wherein these three constituencies registered 1204 out of 1486 or 81% of all such cases in the city. South Central registered 953 cases.

Moving on to other issues such as education, the report shows India’s urbs prima in poor light. The students’ dropout rate per year  in each constituency is 5% to 8%. This means that for every 100 children who enter the 1st standard, only 12 remain till the 10th standard.

“The people who get elected for this Lok Sabha will have a plethora of promises to keep to their constituents,” said Nitai Mehta, founder-trustee of Praja.
