Former chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) state president HD Kumaraswamy accused the BJP government of spending Rs15 crore to Rs 20 crore for campaigning  in a single constituency.

“By misusing the power and bureaucratic machinery, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and his colleagues are spending public money for campaign purposes,” he said in a press meet organised by the Bangalore Reporters’ Guild.

“The Election Commission should ban BJP candidates from contesting the elections. The party is spending the Rs7,000 crore allotted for developmental works for the campaign.  BJP is trying to buy voters, but it will not work out. The voters will teach them a lesson,” he added.

The state BJP government has spent about Rs300 crore from taxpayer’s money to showcase its achievements in the last few months. About Rs100 crore was already spent before the poll dates were announced on advertisements.

He also alleged that the BJP government is claiming credit for development programmes that were initiated by him as the chief minister, while heading the JDS-BJP coalition government.

“Be it the Bhagyalakshmi scheme for girl children, Sandhya Surakasha pension programme for the aged or the distribution of bicycles to students,” he said, adding: “BJP is trying all methods to lure members of different parties to join it. It failed to live up to the expectations of people.”

He said the JD(S) is expected to cross the two digit number in the forthcoming general elections in the state and the Third Front will play a decisive role in forming the next government at the Centre.
