Cognizant Technology Solutions has come up with a three-month e-learning programme that its new hires must compulsorily complete before they can join the company.

The move comes as a surprise for the engineering graduates who were offered jobs by the company back in 2007, when they were still in college. Had all gone well, they would have joined after passing out of college in mid-2008.

But it also holds out hope, considering most other IT companies have delayed the absorption of new candidates, many of them without so much as a notice.

T Sridhar, chief people officer, Cognizant, told DNA the company intended to honour every single campus offer made by it. “We have also made every effort to be responsive to placement officers’ and prospective employees’ calls and correspondences, and are committed to proactively redoubling our communication to these stakeholders given the uncertainty and anxiety caused by the global economic crisis.”

He said the move was based on a proactive suggestion from students and faculty, and is being offered free of cost in tie-up with a reputable agency.

To start with, Cognizant has called in the computer science graduates it made campus offers to. In a letter dated February 26, the company said they had to enrol for the programme within 15 days of receiving the letter. Those not registering within the said timeframe would be deemed to have rejected the offer, it said.

These graduates have started training since March 16.

“We are learning database programming, C++, basic programming languages and grammar skills. After we complete the 18 modules, we will have to sit for an exam and only if we clear it will we be called. Those who are not able to pass the test will not receive joining letters,” said one of the students in the batch.

Students of other engineering branches are expected to get calls only after July or September.

DNA reached out to some of these engineering graduates from different parts of the country through various social networking sites.

Some of them even confessed to have started taking private tuitions to make sure they didn’t fail in the module test.

“I am paying Rs 5,000 for the course. I am from the mechanical engineering stream and have never learnt these programmes before. But I don’t want to lose out on the Cognizant offer. I need this job badly,” said a graduate from Raipur.

The company did not respond to questions on whether the candidates would be judged further after completion of the three-month programme or on placement possibilities for those graduating this year citing ‘silent period’ restrictions.
