No Pakistan-based television broadcaster is allowed to beam into Indian homes, but you can catch all the banned channels on the internet. So, with a quality broadband connection, one can watch anything — Geo TV, PTV, Dawn TV and so many others from Pakistan.

Interestingly, the common link between most of these Pak channels online is the Indian election flavour. The ‘Determined leader and decisive government’ ad campaign of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) runs across the websites of the channels.

In 2005, the I&B ministry formulated policy guidelines for all satellite television channels downlinked / received / transmitted and re-transmitted in India for public viewing. According to the policy, no entity shall downlink a channel, which has not been registered by the I&B ministry.

In effect, the guidelines suggest that any entity offering TV channels uplinked from other countries to viewers in India must obtain permission from the ministry.

One of the eligibility conditions for getting the downlinking permission from the Indian government is that the applicant broadcaster, which is uplinked from abroad, must be a company registered in India under the Indian Companies Act, 1956, irrespective of its equity structure, foreign ownership or management control.

Also, the applicant company must have a commercial presence in India with its principal place of business in India, according to the downlinking norms.

TV broadcasters from Pakistan don’t want to comply with this condition, and therefore are unable to beam into Indian cable and satellite TV homes.

While live streaming of several TV channels of Pakistan can be accessed directly through their respective websites, some others can be reached through intermediary links.
