An 11-year-old school girl, who was "made to stand" in the sun with bricks on her shoulders allegedly by her teacher, died in a city hospital on Friday after battling for life for the past two days.
A class II student of MCD primary school in Bawana, Shona, who was put on ventilator, breathed her last at Maharishi Valmiki Hospital this afternoon.
The girl was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after Manju, a teacher, allegedly punished her for not answering some questions.
"She died in the hospital. We are investigating the case. A case under section 304 of IPC has been registered. We are awaiting for the medical report of the girl," deputy commissioner of police (Outer Delhi) Atul Katiyar said.
Zaki Ahmed, a doctor who attended Shona, said the girl told them that "two bricks were kept on her shoulders and then she was asked to stand in the sun for two hours, which she could not bear and started vomiting."
Her family claimed that the girl was asked to stand in the sun for two hours for not answering some questions.
The girl's death sparked outrage with Union Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Choudhury saying that the authorities cannot "abdicate" responsibility by just suspending the teacher.
"This (suspending the teacher) is to abdicate our collective responsibility...When a child is subjected to violence whether it is at home or school, it is a transgression of child's rights," Choudhury said.
She also attacked the school's argument that the girl child was weak in health. "How dare a school take a record to that or anyone use it as an excuse saying that the child was weak in the first place," she added.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights have taken suo-motu cognizance of the incident and sought reports from authorities.
Meanwhile, MCD had yesterday suspended principal Dhanpati and the teacher Manju. The civic body's commissioner KS Mehra also ordered director of Primary Education section in the civic body to conduct an enquiry into the incident.
The civic body has also ordered a vigilance enquiry into the incident and asked the Department to submit report within three days.
Police is tracing Manju, the accused school teacher, who hails from Haryana's Sonepat.
Sources said a team has left for Sonepat to locate her and arrest her, who is charged under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.
