George was always thinking of cricket. Eventually, his exasperated wife said, “You think of nothing but cricket. I bet you don’t even remember the day we were married.” “Of course I do,” he replied. “It was the day Sir Colin Cowdrey got a 100 not out against Surrey.”

Does that sound like your husband? Has the cricket fever started affecting him already?
The TV is completely dominated by the cricket-loving spouse who gets rooted to the couch and whose only functioning body parts become the eyes and yes, occasionally the mouth too, that munches down those chips, effectively widowing their spouses for the two-month period that is cricket season. Cricket widows are a common sight during the long weeks and months of World Cups, triangular series, Test matches and so on. Now, with the IPL around the corner, the scene is no different.

The cricket season finds a lot of wives and families losing the company of their husbands and dads to the TV.  Anna Jacob, a working mother of one, says she and her husband, an avid cricket fan, have worked out a plan that will enable him to spend ample time with the family as well as his matches.

“I will not be a complete kill-joy and deprive my husband his cricket because that is his source of entertainment after his hectic work schedule. There will definitely be curfews for watching TV during the week to avoid waking up bleary-eyed for work, but much more liberal TV time during weekends. I would probably use the [widow] time to catch up on my reading, checking e-mails, Facebooking and spending time with myself,” she says, optimistically.

Conversely, what was once seen as a man’s game has found its way through to several women folk who today, sit and watch the game even more enthusiastically than their husbands. So without ruling out those rare men folk who take less interest in the game as well, DNA got talking to a few.

David Praveen, a football fan whose wife is a cricket lover, says, “She has her preferences, and I have mine. It’s nice to see her happy, watching cricket, and, though our dining room has shifted to the space in front of the TV, her being glued to the TV gives me more time to spend with my friends. So being a cricket widow is not so bad for me after all.”

“Marriage is all about compromise,” says Mrs Praveen. “Since it’s only for a month, and just a matter of a few hours every day, I’m sure my husband will understand. After all, he knew I was a cricket addict when he married me. The only pinch is that he will have to sacrifice the remote, but I’m sure he won’t mind,” she adds.

So whether you’re a cricket devotee, or praying for rain, stock up on the potato chips, because cricket season is here!
