Old people usually mellow and fade with age, but during election time - they rock!

They appear to be more in demand in this state than anywhere else, simply because political parties have got their math right. The youth in the state constitute nearly 30-40 per cent of the state's electorate, but out of the total 11,62,00,000 voters, the number of above 80 years age voters is approximately 5,40,000, says a BJP leader. This number can be crucial given the cut-throat competition.

"While our rival political parties are going all out to woo the young voters, we have decided to go an extra mile and are also going to the voters above 80 years of age, as they have seen the changing face of the Indian politics over the past few decades," state BJP leader Dharmendra Rai said.

He said it can be safely presumed that "elder members of the family still have a say in the family affairs and more so in the rural areas. Not only they are instrumental in
making opinions, but also play an important role forming and moulding the mindset of the youth."

When asked how the party planned to go about wooing the elderly, Rai said, "You see an elderly voter is always above caste, creed, religion or region. He only wants recognition and respect from those younger to him".

Rai, however said, "It will be unfair to treat them (elderly) as a vote-base and I think by treating them as vote-base, we will be doing a gross injustice to them."

Some of the party candidates, who are actively engaged in wooing the elderly voters include the BJP candidate for Faizabad Lok Sabha seat Lallu Singh.

"Despite knowing that the elderly voters constitute a very small section of the electorate, I admire them, as they play an important role in forming the opinion of the youngsters especially in the rural areas," Singh said.

He also said that traditionally in India, every good work begins only after seeking the blessings of the elders and elections are no exception to it.

The BJP candidate said, "The elderly people do not have any caste, creed or religion and only crave for respect. The message, which we are sending to them is that you have seen the country gaining independence after a long struggle and now you can easily evaluate the condition of the country."
