The prestigious PSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore has come under the scanner with a first year bachelor of business management student Akhil Dev, son of litterateur Sunil Parameshwaran of Trivandrum, filing a case of ragging against five students of the college.

He accused the management of not taking any action though the incident happened more than a month ago on March 7. The Peelamedu police station in Coimbatore has filed FIRs against the five accused students under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997.

"We have filed cases against Ashwin, Ajmal, Arjun (all II year BCom students), Mehasil (I year BBM) and Sameer (III year BCom) under various sections of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997 today [Saturday] after Akhil Dev lodged his complaint. The accused are absconding and police teams have gone to Kerala to locate and arrest them," a police official of Peelamedu police station told Sunday DNA.

Akhil Dev is reported to have been physically tortured in a private hostel near the college by the five students and he almost lost an eye. Akhil Dev underwent treatment including surgery in Ernakulam following the incident and his eyesight is said to have been affected. "I had to lodge a police complaint as the college didn't take any action against the accused. I was beaten up badly as they punched me and jabbed me with my elbows," Akhil Dev told a vernacular TV channel. Akhil said that he was diagnosed with nerve haemorrhage in the eyes besides injuries to the spinal cord.

Students of Coimbatore staged a demonstration on Saturday asking the police to take action against the management for not taking any action against the accused students. The college, however, is reported to have suspended the five students following the complaint lodged by Akhil Dev. The online regulations page of the college http://www.psgcas.ac.in/examinations/regulations.html, says "This is a ragging-free campus.

However, students are informed that ragging on or off the campus is an offence. Strict disciplinary action will be taken if a student is found ragging." The page also lists the phone numbers of four faculty members, who can be contacted in case of any ragging incident.
