Entertaining one-man show

Thai star Tony Jaa stars in this film, presumably a sequel to his debut, Ong Bak. The film is an invigorating mix of fantasy, exotic mysticism, several martial arts styles and passionate bloodletting set in 15th century Thailand. But none of the characters in this film relate to any in the original.

Tien (Tony Jaa) is a gifted but impetuous son of a nobleman from Ayutthaya, who is spirited away by slave traders after his parents are killed. But en route, Tien is rescued by an eclectic group called Garuda Wing Cliff, consisting of magicians and warriors from whom he learns the basic mechanics of several martial art forms, including Muay
Thai and Khon (a traditional dance), after which he decides to traverse the path of vengeance.

The mood is dark, there is a palpable sense of foreboding – a suitable setting for the story that is inlaid with several spiritual and cultural nuances. Jaa’s narrative is peppered with some beautiful fight sequences played out to an exquisite rhythm and beat. The film has an interesting and absorbing story to tell, its narrative is complex – encompassing a Suriyothai-style palace intrigue and the settings and are opulent.

Jaa in fact has had a hand in every aspect of this film’s making. He has co-written the script, he is the producer, director and martial arts coordinator too. The end result is surprisingly coherent and hugely entertaining!
