Even as the Indian archers started their campaign in the World Cup Stage-I in Santo Domingo on a brilliant note, it proved to be a false dawn with country's only medal hope now lying on Dola Banerjee and Reena Kumari.

Indian contenders got a reality check as most of them bowed in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the tournament on Friday.

Dola will now lock horns with Reena in the third place play-off in the women's recurve section on Sunday.

Fourth seed Dola and eleventh seed Reena moved to the last-four stage but only to taste defeat at the hands of Alison Williamson of Great Britain and Natalia Valeeva of Italy respectively.

Dola was beaten by the World No 8, Briton 101-95, while the Italian world champion crushed Reena 111-104.

Earlier, Laishram Bombayla Devi went down to Dola in the quarter-finals in a thrilling encounter. Both were locked 106-106 and even in the tie-breaker the stalemate remained (9-9).

However, Dola bagged ten points to Bombaylas nine in the second tie-breaker to enter into the semi-final.

Ninth ranked Rimil Buriuly, youngest member of the Indian contingent, lost to 24th seed Nathalie Dielen of Switzerland 100-101 in the second round.

performances in the FITA round qualifications on the day One.

In the men's recurve, second seed Mangal Singh Champia lost to Simon Terry of Great Britain 112-114 in quarter-final.

Jayanta Talukdar was ousted by fifth seed Crispin Duenas of Canada 102-105 while 16th seed Kapil went down to fourth seed Juan Rene Serrano of Mexico 108-112.

In the men's compound section, luck of draw played foul with teammates M Chinglensana Luwang and Kh Ratan Singh clashing in the first round. Latter won by one point (111-110), but was then stunned top seed Dave Cousins of USA 117-114 in the second round.

Ratan's campaign ended in the pre-quarters when he lost to compatriot, World No 17 Chungda Sherpa 108-110, who was later stunned by Braden Gellasthien of USA.

National champion, tenth seed Chinna Raju Srither, lost to Patrizio Hofer of Switzerland 112-113 in pre-quarterfinal.

Indian women compound trio of Jhano Hansdah, Bheigyabati Chanu and Manjudha Soy lost to their higher-ranked rivals in the pre-quarterfinals.
