The state BJP has decided to take up the issue of retrieving lakh crores of black money stashed away in Swiss banks. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the party will take into account the opinion of the public in the state on whether these funds should be brought back into the country. The BJP will conduct public voting to this effect early next month, Modi said.

This announcement was made after the inauguration of the election office of senior BJP leader LK Advani at Usmanpura, on Monday. “According to estimates, there is anywhere between Rs25 lakh crore and Rs70 lakh crore Indian rupees deposited in Swiss banks. If this money is brought back to India, it will enable us to settle many debts,” he said.

Modi has suggested to the state BJP president that a public poll to find out the opinion of the general public on this issue be conducted. “We will cover 50 lakh people in the state,” he said, adding: “The black money in Swiss banks can indirectly aid terrorism.”

Coming down heavily on the UPA-led central government, Modi said, “There is no unity in the UPA. In three states, the allies of the Congress are not willing to give it more than nine seats out of 140. The Congress will not be able to even reach three figures in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.”

Raising the issue of national security, he said, “We should look at the situation in Pakistan. The Taliban has entered Pakistan and is setting eyes on Karachi, which is not far from Mumbai and Gujarat.”
